From The Canyons at Scenic Loop, the holiday season runs on three December Saturdays: the 5th, the 12th and the 19th. Across the month, the center of activity shifts away from Old Town Helotes and toward Government Canyon State Natural Area. On December 5, everything happens in town. On December 12, the day splits, with the canyon in the morning and Old Town at night. By December 19, Government Canyon is holding its own evening event at the amphitheater.
The dates below come from the organizers' 2026 calendars as of mid-October. The City of Helotes has not yet posted year-specific dates for its two main holiday events. Instead, it publishes a fixed rule for them, and this post works the 2026 dates out from that rule.
The calendar in one view
- Friday, December 4. Lighting of the Lights at Helotes City Hall, using the city's first-Friday rule.
- Saturday, December 5. Helotes MarketPlace in Old Town by day, and Shane Smith and the Saints at Floore's Country Store at night.
- Saturday, December 12. Winter Holiday Traditions at Government Canyon in the morning, and the Helotes Hill Country Christmas Parade in Old Town at night, using the city's second-Saturday rule.
- Saturday, December 19. Christmas Campfire Story and S'mores at Government Canyon, the same night Kolby Cooper plays Floore's.
November gets the canyon ready first
Government Canyon's calendar fills before Helotes' does. On Saturday, November 21, Texas Parks and Wildlife has scheduled The Wonder of Texas' Native Plants. It's a 1.5-mile walk on the Discovery Trail from 9 to 11:30 a.m. The same morning, the park's event calendar lists Trek to the Dino Tracks, a five-mile guided hike that starts at 9 a.m.
The following Saturday, November 28, the park has two events on the same day: Indigenous People, Plants and Animals at 9 a.m., and the Kallison Ranch Hike at 2 p.m.
The timing matters because of the trails. The Protected Habitat Area trails are open only from September through February, so these programs, like everything that follows in December, fall inside the months when the most terrain is open. Over those two November weekends, the canyon's events are all daytime hikes and walks. The December events add crafts and a campfire.
December 4 and 5: Old Town holds the weekend
The City of Helotes lists Lighting of the Lights on its Marketing & Events page as falling on the "First Friday in December" at City Hall, 12951 Bandera Road. The program includes children's choir performances, the tree lighting and a visit from Mr. Claus. In 2026, the first Friday is December 4. For comparison, the 2025 lighting was on Friday, December 5, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., with school choirs and the Helotes Area Community Band, according to the city's 2025 holiday announcement. The city hadn't posted a 2026 version of that announcement when this was written, so check the time closer to the date.
The next morning, December 5, the Helotes MarketPlace holds its December market from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Old Town Helotes. The market's about page puts it at 14391 Riggs Road. This is the MarketPlace's regular monthly arts-and-crafts market, not a separately advertised Christmas market. Its first Saturday of December still makes it the first holiday-shopping stop of the season in Old Town.
That evening, Floore's Country Store has Shane Smith and the Saints, with Braedon Barnhill and Wade Forster opening. The show page also offers an Ugly Sweater Christmas Party VIP package. The whole first weekend stays in Helotes: the lighting on Bandera Road, the market on Riggs Road and the concert at Floore's. None of it goes into the canyon.
December 12: the day splits in two
On the second Saturday, the canyon takes the morning. Government Canyon's Winter Holiday Traditions runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Gallery beside the Visitor Center, with crafts that include wreaths and candles. TPWD lists the activity as free with no registration required, though the park entrance fee still applies. The fee is $6 per adult per day, and children 12 and under get in free.
Old Town takes the evening. The city schedules the Helotes Hill Country Christmas Parade for the "Second Saturday in December" in Old Town Helotes, which puts it on December 12 this year. In 2025, the parade fell on Saturday, December 13, from 7 to 8 p.m. The city's First Responders Breakfast was held at the Helotes Fire Department that same morning from 9 to 11, with a visit from Santa. The city hasn't confirmed whether the breakfast will share the parade's date again in 2026. Unlike the parade and the lighting, the breakfast has no fixed rule on the city's events page.
If the 2025 timing holds, December 12 is the only Saturday this season that has events at both Government Canyon and Old Town. The crafts end at 1 p.m. and the parade starts around 7. The canyon program has a confirmed 2026 date, while the parade date comes from the city's rule. That makes the morning the more certain half of the day.
December 19: the canyon takes the evening
By the third Saturday, the canyon has an evening event. Christmas Campfire Story and S'mores runs from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Amphitheater near the Frontcountry Trailhead. Like the December 12 crafts, it's free, requires no registration and is covered by the entrance fee. It ends well before closing time, since Saturday gate hours run from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Floore's has a show the same night. Kolby Cooper plays with Jaxon Malone, and doors open at 7 p.m. Both events start at 7 p.m. On the 19th, the canyon and the concert hall compete for the same evening.
Weeknights belong to Floore's, and the lights are north
The Saturdays carry the community events, while Floore's adds shows on weeknights in between:
- Wednesday, December 2: Koe Wetzel and Parker McCollum's Naughty or Nice Tour, doors at 7 p.m.
- Thursday, December 10: Redferrin with Scout Speer, doors at 6 p.m.
- Friday, December 11: Kaitlin Butts with Meels, doors at 7 p.m.
Details are on the Koe Wetzel and Parker McCollum, Redferrin and Kaitlin Butts show pages. Including the two Saturday shows, Floore's has five December dates, the last on the 19th.
The one long-running light display nearby is north, in Boerne. The Old West Christmas Light Fest at Enchanted Springs Ranch runs from November 27 to December 23, 2026, with lights, live music, snow and Santa. The festival page gives the date range but doesn't list which nights it's open, so check before you drive up. It's also the one event this month that runs on the open evenings between the dated events.
Getting into the canyon on a December Saturday
Government Canyon is involved in three of these weekends. Two details decide whether you get in:
- Reserve a day pass. TPWD says day-use reservations are recommended but not required. You can still buy a pass at the gate if any are left, but drop-in entry can stop once the park reaches capacity, and weekends are the most likely days to fill. The park page says it "often" reaches capacity and highly recommends reservations to guarantee entry.
- Confirm holiday hours closer to the date. The park is now open daily. Gate hours are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday through Monday and 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. The park's holiday-hours page still shows the 2025 schedule, so any Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Year changes for 2026 haven't been posted yet.
For Helotes, the city's news page is where a 2026 holiday announcement would appear. As of October 9, nothing had been posted.
